What is Cladding?

Cladding is an exterior covering system for walls and roofs that is designed to protect the underlying structure as well as providing an aesthetically pleasing decorative finish.

One of many advantages of the cladding solution is the speed at which it can be installed.

Types of Cladding

There are many different types of cladding that you can choose from and advantages / disadvantages for each.

Some cladding solutions may be impractical if required to fit onto an existing structure with an unsuitable substrate. So identifying what looks right and is a practical and economical solution for your needs is our main concern.

Here is a brief overview of the most common types of cladding.

  • Timber cladding - Suitable for all types of homes, real timber cladding is a particularly attractive solution and a sustainable resource. Provided as panels, shingles or horizontal boards. Weather treated for longevity, the finished cladding will require an initial and periodic covering with suitable stain, oil or paint.

  • Stone Cladding - Provided as real or simulated stone, this undoubtedly has the most dramatic effect on a home or business premises. Using thin layers of stone the process can be rather slow and labour intensive.

  • Brick Cladding - Allows the use of coloured bricks to create different patterns and designs. Requiring little maintenance, brick cladding is lightweight and very easy to work with.

  • UPVC Cladding - Coming in a variety of colours, UPVC / vinyl / plastic cladding requires practically zero maintenance. This is a very economical cladding solution both in terms of maintenance costs and initial outlay.

  • Cement Fibre Cladding - Made by compressing cellular fibre and cement into sheets, this cladding solution is quick and easy to install and requires very little maintenance.

  • External Insulated Finish System (EIFS) - or external foam cladding is made from expanded polystyrene, reinforced with a fibreglass mesh and finished with a render. Coming in panel form it is extremely energy efficient, tough and weather resistant and easy to install.

  • Metal Sheet Cladding - A rapid cladding solution coming as either steel or aluminium sheets. The metal is anodised, galvanised or powder coated for protection. Mixing flat and corrugated panels, which come in a number of colours can create varying low maintenance design finishes.

  • Concrete Cladding - Coming in panel form suitable for either internal or external applications. Concrete cladding can be moulded to produce natural stone effects or flat sleek contemporary looks. Incredibly strong and hardy, it requires very little maintenance.
